Burntwood Asylum Burial Ground

Burntwood Asylum Burial Ground

In October 2025 I filmed this walk around the Burntwood Asylum Graveyard, now known as Coulter Lane Burial Ground. There are nine CWGC graves there from WW1, which I have photographed for Find a Grave. I am planning to research these soldiers, most of whom were tragically "discharged insane".

Since filming this I have confirmed the following diagnoses at the asylum:

Sidney Ager - "mania".
John Craddock - "insanity with epilepsy"
William Startin - "melancholia".
James McDonald - "mania"
Joseph McGuiness - "mania"
James Massey - "general paralysis of the insane"
John Sutton - "stupor"
Thomas Woolley - "mania"
John Davis - "mania".

This burial ground is owned by Burntwood Town Council. The Servicemen's headstones are maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. My friend Keely alerted the CWGC to the poor condition of the headstones and sent them my photos. I'm pleased to say that they responded quickly and the headstones have since been cleaned by the CWGC's Eyes on Hands On team.
